An operating system is a collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is an essential component of the system software in a computer. All application programs/softwares usually require an operating system to function. The operating system acts as an intermediary between the programs and the computer hardware.
If you are a Windows 7 user, I guess this post will be of great importance to you. Those days are gone when your pc develops a minor fault either as a result of virus attack and you find it hard to format your pc because you are scared of losing your files. With this tutorial, you can format your pc and still be able to have access to your old files. This is how it works; most times while formatting a pc, most people go ahead to format the hard disk compartment which contains the files in the previous windows but with this means, you only need to install a new operating system and still have access to your old files.
HOW IT WORKS
1. While the PC is still on, insert the windows bootable CD. Switch off the PC so that the CD loads immediately you switch the PC on (i.e if you set your PC to boot from CD before booting the hard drive in the BIOS area)
2. When the CD loads, the Computer automatically picks those files that are required to install a new window.
3. Follow the steps till it gets to the stage where you will choose the hard disk compartment you want to install the window, just go ahead and select a particular compartment i.e if you have two or more compartments, where you installed the window should be the one with a larger disk space. If you have only one, choose it and ignore the option to delete or format because that will only end up deleting all your files in your hard disk.
4. After selecting the compartment, windows will inform you that the files in your old windows will now be saved in a path => windows.old located in your primary/local disk, take note of these.
Follow up the steps till the computer is done formatting i.e when you are welcomed into the new windows which look pretty much empty because you have lost your programs and applications but not files. So you can start installing back the applications/softwares.
5. This is the most important stage; open your primary/local disk (C). You will locate a folder with name windows.old that is where your old files are stored/backed up by the new operating system. Check up all the folders in the windows.old folder especially the users folder to locate all the documents in the previous windows.
6. Now copy all the files back to their usual location i.e copy documents to documents, videos to videos, music to music, and pictures to pictures folder. That is all; your computer will come back to life without you losing any file or document.
